Shadow Education Secretary visits Leeds North East Labour Party summer event

Councillor Tom Murray and his wife Edna very kindly hosted a garden party fund raising event for constituency Labour members and other invited friends at their home in Hodgson Crescent on Sunday afternoon the 5th September 2011. The weather was kind and there was a very good turn out of members who also came to hear former Health and Treasury Minister and now Shadow Education Secretary Andy Burnham MP who was the special guest to whom Fabian was pleased to give a very special welcome.

Andy Burnham congratulated Labour members in Leeds North East for the hard work they had undertaken at the last election which had been rewarded in the increase in the number of Labour Councillors representing wards in the constituency. (Christine Macniven was returned for Roundhay displacing a sitting Conservative councillor and Rebecca Charlwood was elected in Meanwood and Moortown ousting a Liberal Democrat Councillor.) Andy also congratulated Fabian on retaining the Leeds NE seat with a strong majority at a time when the Labour pary was under national pressure following the banking crisis and recession. He also explained how Labour at Westminster was working to oppose damaging government NHS reforms. He also explained the dangers of the new free schools and how they would become protected middle class elitist enclaves in some parts of the country and would damage equality of provision by drawing resources from other schools. Andy was up-beat about Labour's chances of retaking power at the next general election and encouraged local Labour members in their work which he said was inspiring to fellow Shadow Cabinet members.

At the garden party Andy was being chased by ITN news crews who were also keen to ask about opposition to planned government health reforms,

Andy is MP for Leigh in Lancashire and was also Shadow Secretary of State for Health before undertaking his present portfolio. For more information on Andy Burnham MP - Click here For his personal web site - Click here
