Dalai Lama at the Yorkshire International Business Convention

Fabian was delighted to take part in the welcome accorded to the Dalai Lama at the Yorkshire International Business Convention that was held in Leeds on Friday 15th June 2012. The visit of the Dalai Lama to this prestigious event had led to controversy when pressure was exerted on Leeds City Council by the Chinese government to dissociate itself from the event. Chinese athletes would withdraw from their commitment to use local venues as part of their training for the forthcoming Olympic Games.

Fabian who chairs the All Party Parliamentary Group on Tibet and who has supported the work of the Dalai Lama over many years reacted furiously. He appeared on the TV news to denounce the action of the Chinese Government which, being undemocratic and intolerant of minorities, had no moral authority to dictate the decisions to be taken by the democratically elected Council in the UK which is a democratic country where human rights are respected.
