The death of Sir Stuart Bell MP
The Death of Sir Stuart Bell
Fabian has just heard of the sad death of his good friend Sir Stuart Bell, the long-serving Labour MP for Middlesborough.
Stuart, who had been the town's MP since 1983, became a good friend of Fabian's not long after Fabian was first elected to Parliament in 1997. As well as an interest in all things French - Stuart and Fabian both spoke the language fluently - Stuart was a mentor to Fabian in his early years in the Commons becoming a good friend and always offering sound advice when it was needed.
Fabian said "I have just read that Stuart died this afternoon at home with his friends and family following a short illness caused by cancer of the pancreas.
"I will really miss Stuart who has always been a good friend, always encouraged and helped me over the past fifteen years, and usually greeted me in French, which sometimes baffled bystanders but helped me keep my conversational French going.
"His loss is a real blow to the residents of Middlesborough, the Labour Party and all his colleagues of all parties in Parliament, but most of all his wife Margaret and his family".
