Electon 2010: The choice for Leeds North East

Friday 9th April 2010 11:48 AM

The General Election campaign for 2010 is underway and it is going to be a decsive one for Britain. Both in Leeds North East and the wider country people face a decisive choice over what kind of Britain they want; one of hope and renewal under Labour or despair and uncertainty under the Conservatives. Nobody denies that things have been tough recently, however, Britain's economy has just begun to turn the corner under the guidance of the government. Meanwhile, the Conservatives are desperate to say anything to get elected; one day they complain about the size of the deficit the next they are promising billions of pounds worth of tax cuts while failing to explain that this will have to be paid for. They want you to believe that they can conjure money out of thin-air without telling you the truth about how they will really pay for it; by raising taxes that will punish the poorest and cutting back services.

Conservatives want you to believe they have changed and that they are not the Party they used to be but nothing could be further from the truth. We all saw that as Chris Grayling argued that Bed and Breakfasts should have the right to refuse entry to gay couples. David Cameron has, up to this point , neither done or said nothing about Grayling's remarks. Underneath the glossy covers the Conservative Party remains the same Party it always has been; committed to favours for the few and hostile to our liberal, tolerant and inclusive society of which many of us are so proud.

They are a threat to our economy, and the very values which underpin our society and make Britain truly great. Locally, their refusal to give firm guarantees on extending to the high-speed rail project to Leeds shows their lack commitment to Leeds as a city and the council under their leadership has presided over a regime of cuts and attacks on our most vulnerable. Labour, in partnership with the community, has delivered lasting change we can see and I am proud to have played my part in that change and to have served this community. I am asking you to place your trust in me and let me serve Leeds North East again; I am looking forward to meeting as many of you over the coming weeks as I can and discussing these and any other issues that you want to raise.
