Neil Clephan OBE

Neil Clephan OBE

Neil Clephan, Head Teacher of Roundhay School was awarded the OBE by the Queen in the 2016 New Year's Honours List. Fabian pays this tribute to his work.

Neil has been the Headteacher of Roundhay High School since before I was elected to Parliament in 1997.  I first met him when I chaired the Education Committee of Leeds City Council in 1996 and have continued to enjoy seeing and meeting him at Roundhay High School and many other venues.  For a short while he was Acting Head at my son’s school in Pudsey, turning around that school from its then downward trajectory.

At Roundhay, Neil has made the school one of the best and highest-achieving schools in Leeds.  He is an inspirational leader and is well-loved by students and staff alike.  Every time I visit Roundhay I am impressed at the quality of the teaching and the motivation of the pupils – the school is well-organised, disciplined and creative.  Most of its students do not come from a privileged background and the diversity is huge, yet Neil has achieved a cohesion and strong sense of purpose which ensures that every student – irrespective of ability or background – is able to receive a high quality education.  The successful addition of a Primary School on a nearby site – a so-called “through school” – has only added to the amazing offer that Roundhay is able to make to the communities it serves.  Neil has created the very best of an ideal comprehensive education working for the benefit of all.  He richly deserves the recognition he has been given.
