Fabian Hamilton has, from the outset, devoted most of his time to working in the constituency supporting those who live there. In order to respond to the many requests for help, Fabian has based his team at the heart of the constituency in North East Leeds rather than isolating them from constituents at Westminster. The very socially and ethnically mixed constituency gives rise to a large number of requests for help.
The constituency office maintains a casework file on a computer that stores all the contact details and all records of work and documents. Since Fabian was first elected in 1997, the file has grown to some 12,000 records, each an individual request for Fabian to try and provide help. The casework file does not list the large number of extra requests that are sorted out straight away. Most casework arises from the advice surgeries that Fabian holds regularly each week at different venues throughout North East Leeds.
Over the 13 years that Fabian has served the constituency of Leeds North East, the number of new cases averages out at around 20 each week. Many cases have required Fabian to contact government departments or Leeds City Council over such matters as immigration, visas, housing, benefits, the NHS and taxation. Quite often cases are followed up with correspondence and keeping constituents in touch wth any outcomes. Without the help of a small team of constituency office staff, this casework load could not be undertaken and large numbers of constituents could not have received the help and support that Fabian, though his position as MP, is able to provide. Fabian's commitment to the people of Leeds North East is unquestionable. In Fabian, the community of Leeds North East has - for the past 13 years - had a dedicated representative whose first priority is always the well-being of the community and the people within it.
