Benefits for working parents

Working parents are entitled to take time off from work for dependents, take leave in connection with the care of young and newly arrived children, and claim financial support for bringing them up.

The financial support includes maternity leave, statutory maternity pay and a maternity grant. Fathers may also take two weeks leave on the birth of a child and claim pay. Child benefits are paid for each child up to the age of 16yrs or longer if they in full time education. Tax credits can also top up your income if you have dependent children.

A very informative leaflet from the Trade Union USDAW summarises these benefits clearly.
