Anger at possible parole for Yorkshire Ripper

The story that convicted Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe, may be moved to prison from Broadmoor secure psychiatric hospital as a precursor to his release on parole in 2011 has brought a huge wave of anger and fear to many people in Leeds and West Yorkshire.

Leeds North East MP, Fabian Hamilton, represents the constituency where Sutcliffe's first murders were carried out and has made the following statement.

"Peter Sutcliffe must never be released, whether from Boradmoor or from a prison. He is a truly evil man who has consistently manipulated everyone around him in order to make them believe he was driven to murder and mutilate women. I have pressed previous Home Secretaries David Blunkett and Charles Clarke to reassure me and the public that Sutcliffe will remain behind bars for the rest of his life and I have written today to Lord Chancellor and Justice Secretary, Jack Straw to seek further reassurance. "

"The prime issue is public safety and I have already heard from constituents who are worried that his release in two years' time may be considered. I have urged Jack Straw to make it clear that Sutcliffe will remain where he is and will never be granted parole. "

Fabian Hamilton has also written a strongly worded letter to Jack Straw the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice urging that Sutcliffe should not be considered for release in two years time. Click here.
